Kia ora. My name is Maggie Toco and I'm the Consumer Commissioner for the Mental hhealth and Wellbeing commission. My name's Dan Stubbs I'm the Victorian Disability Worker Commissioner and I'm really happy to be here with Maggie in Human Rights Week. This Human Rights Week I wanted to highlight human rights and the principles within the mental health and wellbeing Act of 2022. Following the Royal Commission, a goal of the new Act was to create stronger protections and responsibilities for Human Rights to be upheld for people receiving mental health treatment care and support their families, carers and kin. The new act includes 13 principles. Dan, you might like to talk a little bit about how that interacts with your work yeah so those principles are such an important underpinning for Human Rights for all people experiencing mental illness and psychological distress. Also, we find that they work really well to interact and support the code of conduct which we use as an expectation for all disability workers right across Victoria to meet when they're supporting people with mental illness. The Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission is currently creating guidance that will help people understand how these principles work in a practical way. This guidance has been made with the help of people with lived experience and we want to make sure the guide is practical and helps people understand their rights and make decisions about their care treatment and recovery. So important for an organisation like the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission to be supporting people to make it easier to understand their Human Rights and also to provide feedback or complain about a service that isn't right for them. If you feel that your rights or the rights of someone you care for have not been upheld while receiving mental health treatment and care, you you can make a complaint directly to the service or you can contact us on 1800 246 054 visit our website on mhwc.vic.gov.au. If you have any concerns about the support you're receiving from any support worker or professional working with you we're really happy to hear from you at the Disability Worker Commission. Just find us online at vdwc.vic.gov.au thanks so much.
